Physical And Sexual Abuse Linked To Asthma In Puerto Rican Kids

Children wHO are physically or sexually abused ar more than twice as likely to have asthma attack as their peers, according to a recent study of urban children in Puerto Rico. In fact, physical and sexual misuse was second only to maternal asthma attack in all the peril factors tried and true, including agnatic asthma and indicators of socioeconomic status.

"To our knowledge, this is the first report card of a direct association between childhood abuse and asthma and asthma-related outcomes," wrote Robyn T. Cohen, M.D., M.P.H., lead generator of the paper of the Channing Laboratory of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

The article was published in the first consequence for September of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, a publication of the American Thoracic Society.

"We wanted to explore whether exposure to stress and violence is associated with an increased risk of asthma in urban children living in Puerto Rico," said principal investigator, Juan C. Celedn, M.D., Dr.P.H. "We already know that there is a high prevalence of asthma in Puerto Rican children, and many studies have coupled stress and exposure to violence to health problems in childhood, including asthma attack."

The researchers interviewed 1,353 parent-child pairs in between 2001 and 2003, and re-interviewed nearly 90 percent of the same pairs 2 years later their initial interviews. They used validated questionnaires to elicit information about strain and violence in the children's lives (whenever possible, without the parent demonstrate), and exploited doctor-diagnosed asthma attack, allergic rhinitis, use of prescription medicinal drug for asthma and doctor visits for asthma and/or allergic coryza within the previous class to assess the children's asthma/allergy status.

"Children with a history of abuse had higher frequencies of all outcomes of sake than those without a history of abuse," wrote Dr. Cohen. "After adjusting for relevant covariates, story of misuse was associated with an approximate doubling of the odds of current bronchial asthma, healthcare enjoyment for bronchial asthma, and hypersensitised rhinitis." For example, whereas 15 (20 percent) of the 75 children with a history of step had flow asthma, 128 (11.5 percent) of 1,117 children without history of abuse had current bronchial asthma.

The study did not, however, line up a nexus between neighborhood violence and asthma, as other studies have through with in the past. The researchers suggest that the discrepancy may be the result of the fact that "it is not simply the exposure to a particular stressor but the physiologic response to that stressor that predicts physical health outcomes."

Individual responses to stressors such as community violence will vary, and according to some information, Puerto Rican culture itself may take in protective features. "Latino culture places an emphasis on certain values and societal supports that may buffer the effects of impoverishment and community violence experient by children in Puerto Rico," aforesaid Dr. Cohen. Direct forcible or sexual abuse, however, could campaign a break down of those buffering systems.

The investigators postulate that abuse may alter the

Creative NZ picks sculptor, painter for Venice show

Hand-made figures inspired by medieval painters, and large painted canvases that intersect walls and windows, will represent cutting-edge Kiwi art at the Venice Biennale.

London-based Christchurch sculptor Francis Upritchard will make the figures of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Brueghel, and abstract painter Judy Millar, of Auckland, the large-scale canvases.

The announcement for next year's biennale comes three years after Creative New Zealand was criticised for choosing art collective et al to represent New Zealand at the 2005 biennale, the world's oldest and largest exhibition of contemporary art.

The collective's earlier works had included a toilet that brayed like a donkey. The decision became a public relations disaster as the collective remained anonymous and the artist reluctant to be interviewed.

Creative NZ, which is partly funded by taxpayers, will spend $650,000 exhibiting Upritchard and Millar's works in Venice for six months next year - $150,000 more than on exhibiting et al. It will also aim to raise another $400,000 from sponsorship and private patronage.

Creative NZ arts council chairman Alastair Carruthers said Millar was "one of New Zealand's most experienced abstractionists" and her project for Venice was "strong, bold and exciting".

Millar, in her early fifties, is well known for her large paintings.

Upritchard, who is her early thirties and has exhibited in Europe and the United States, won the prestigious $50,000 Walters Award in 2006 for her installation of sculptures called Doomed Doomed Doomed.

Mr Carruthers said the biennale, which features work from 70 countries, was one of the best ways for New Zealand to promote its artists overseas.

Support staff will also be in Venice.

'Beyonce & Jay-Z Should Get Pregnant'

Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z should get pregnany and start a family, believes Snoop Dogg.

Following all the pregnancy rumours, the hip hop star reckons the newlyweds should temporarily ditch their careers and concentrate on producing a brood of children.

He tells People: "I told them to go home and make babies. They should, that's the next step as far as marriage, having kids ... add on to the family, so hopefully that's what they'll do."

But the rapper, who has three children with wife of ten years Shante, isn't taking his own advice on board, insisting he isn't keen on the idea of adding to his family.

When asked if he was planning another tot, he says: "No. I'm good."

And his views on the secrets of a successful marriage: "Communication, and being able to fight and get back up. To have misunderstanding and (then) get some understanding."

Snoop is father to 13-year-old Corde, Cordell, 11, and Cori, eight.

The RZA to Release Long-Awaited New Bobby Digital Album "DIGI SNACKS" in July 2008

RZA's much beloved character Bobby Digital returns this summer with "Digi Snacks," a brand new studio album via KOCH Records. "Digi Snacks" will be out in July of 2008.
The Bobby Digital character was introduced some ten years ago with the release of "In Stereo" and went underground seven years ago after the release of "Digital Bullet." To date, Bobby Digital releases have sold a combined 1 million units.
"This world wasn't in a digital format in 1998. Now digital is the most compelling force of commerce and entertainment," RZA explains. "So this is like a re-launch of the character." And some of the 'real life' characters that Bobby Digital tapped for "Digi Snacks" definitely lend to the mission: John Frusciante, Dhani Harrison, The Black Knights, Dexter Wiggles, Shavo Odadjian (System of a Down), Reverend William Burke, Stone Mecca and Scandinavian newcomer Thea. There's even a track produced by David Banner. He continues, "I think 'Digi Snacks' is an album with a lot of fun. This album is more of a performance album too. When you see it live, you'll get a difference experience. I'm not trying to get into the world... I'm trying to bring the world to come to us."
To celebrate the release of "Digi Snacks," RZA will embark on a National U.S. tour with the future-soul group Stone Mecca as his backing band.
RZA has produced a number of albums for the Wu Tang Clan, its affiliates, and other A-list artists that have led to sales in the millions. He has a successful movie career and has appeared in films with Bill Murray ("Coffee & Cigarettes"), Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe ("American Gangster"), Angela Bassett ("Gospel Hill"), Jude Law & Forest Whitaker ("Repossession Mambo"), and Clive Owens ("Derailed"). RZA's also created soundtracks for Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" Vol. 1 & 2, "Afro Samurai" and the cult-classic "Ghostdog: The Way Of The Samurai." He's revolutionized the hip-hop world while simultaneously creating an empire upon it. And yet RZA says, "I've only just begun to enter my prime."
Described by his colleagues, admirers, and even haters alike as a "mad scientist," Robert Diggs, aka RZA, comes across more like a relentless warrior. And like any good warrior, he's on a mission... an honorable quest to infect all he comes across with a positive polarity. "You taste everything every day. You go through these different shifts of positives and negatives throughout your whole day," he explains. "I just make more of a fiction thing around it, metaphors in all different ways. That's all I'm doing. You get the Manga, you get the Martial Arts, you get the Sci-Fi, you get the Blaxploitation, but you still get your real life because I'm a real person."
Engulfed in a full-on story of revenge, betrayal, seduction, hustlin' and pimpin' slaves as souls, completed with a cast of characters that includes the return of The Raven, The Hawk, The Eagle, The Vulture, The four fouls of prey and, of course, Barbara Peppers, Bobby Digital explains, "If you follow the character, he's always talking with himself between good and evil, trying to balance himself. Sometimes when you think you're all the way at the end, you're actually at the beginning."
The Bobby Digital tour dates featuring Stone Mecca are:
June 10 Houston, TX Warehouse Live
June 11 Austin, TX Emo's
June 12 Dallas, TX Palladium Ballroom
June 14 Denver, CO Cervantes Ballroom
June 15 Salt Lake City, UT Urban Lounge
June 17 Tucson, AZ Rialto Theater
June 18 Phoenix, AZ The Brickhouse
June 20 Los Angeles, CA Henry Fonda Theater
June 21 San Francisco, CA 1015
June 23 Portland, OR Hawthorne Theater
June 24 Seattle, WA Showbox
June 25 Vancouver, CAN Richards

July 2 Pontiac, MI Crofoot Ballroom
July 4 Ottawa, CAN New Capital Hall
July 5 New York, NY Webster Hall

The rest of his virtual super-enigma includes WuChess.com, "a great platform for the digital world... a whole new world of myth and reality where people can come talk about chess and challenge the Wu members in our chambers," a video game, a comic book, and a film, all in development and all mostly focusing on the story of a digital superhero who "transforms into a powerful being that struggles with the good and evil inside himself by saving the lives of others."

After touring in backup of their 1993 masterpiece Painkiller, the seminal choice reticuloendothelial system publica band Uncle Tupelo tree stock split up over long-simmering creative differences 'tween co-leaders Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy. Tweedy recruited much of the isthmus to shape Wilco, spell out Farrar teamed up with master copy Tupelo drummer Microphone Heidorn to form Boy Volt, the more tradition-minded of the iI Tupelo offshoots. Joined by brothers Jim (bass) and Dave Boquist (guitar, victimize, banjo, fiddle, steel guitar), the band signed to Warner Brothers and released its debut album, Draw, in 1995. It was greeted with fantabulous reviews from to the highest degree critics, offer a set of stark, insidious, for the to the highest degree portion downbeat songs that john Drew from traditional area, ethnic music, and roots rock. The unmarried "Drown" was successful on both college and rock and roll and roll radio, and the band after added unofficial fifth member Eric Heywood on mandolin and pedal point blade for its second gear album. 1997's Straightaways mined territory similar to Trace and again touchstone positive reviews, though roughly institute Farrar's deficiency of creative forth motion disturbing. 1998's Wide of the grade Swing Tremolo was a middling harder-rocking social function, only the wearing of critical support for the grouping continued. They altogether over up on an unofficial foramen (rumors of their dissipation were denied), and Farrar debuted as a solo creative person with 2001's Sevastopol, putt the future of Logos Volt in farther uncertainty. He continued with his solo career throughout 2002 and 2003, and in 2005 Rhino issued Retrospective: 1995-2000. But Logos Volt wasn't over. Farrar reanimated the nameplate in July 2005 with the egress of Okemah and the Tonal pattern of Public violence (Legacy). For the album, recorded in St. Joseph Louis Barrow, Farrar was joined by drummer Dave Bryson, bassist Saint Andrew DuPlantis, and ex-Backsliders guitar player Brad Rice. Search arrived in early 2007.
